Calvin and Regeneration

For Calvin repentance is the reality of regeneration, which for him is the conversion of the whole of life in mortification and vivification. Hence his (otherwise startling) chapter title in Institutes 3.3: “Our Regeneration by Faith: Repentance.” (Lest the point be missed, in the later Reformed theological categorization these words, “regeneration by faith,” would have sounded distinctly Arminian, giving faith precedence over regeneration!).
