Conformed to Christ

This is a new stage of service for Jesus. He enters into the public arena. In the frailty of human flesh he stands in need of a fresh and greater endowment of the Spirit, in order that, through his death, resurrection and ascension, he may become the One who enters into such unmeasured possession of the Spirit that he himself will be able to baptize with the Holy Spirit (cf Jn. 1:33-34). Jesus, who has been borne by the Spirit through the first thirty years of his life, now increasingly expresses his relationship with the Spirit in accomplishing our redemption. He receives him without measure. Just as those who were baptized by John placed their whole lives under his baptism for repentance (and were summoned to life-long repentance), so Jesus was baptized with the Spirit and lived under his lordship. So also do those who in turn receive Christ's baptism in order that they might be conformed to Christ.
