Calvin and Manducatio Impiorum
Calvin objects to the manducatio impiorum on the specific grounds that there is no union with the Spirit-andointed Christ that is less than vivifying or life-giving. Union with the Christ who is Life by the Spirit cannot but enliven.... Those who truly eat the flesh and blood of Christ thus do so only to their nourishment. Because Christ is only truly present when he is present with his Spirit, his flesh cannot but vivify. (emphasis original)
