Edict of Worms
The edict of Worms outlawed Luther and all who gave him support. All subjects were forbidden to assist or even communicate with Luther on pain of arrest and confiscation of their property. All his writings were condemned as heretical and ordered burned. Now outlawed by the state as well as excommunicated by the church, Luther was compelled by his conscience and faith to defy both church and state.
