The Fourth Component of Faith

Because several acts coincide in saving faith—knowledge, assent, consent, trust, and so forth—we must observe that one particular act is predominant among them—the act that when present, salvation is present, and when absent, salvation is absent; thus the act that is called saving. What act is it then? The text answers, “Receiving,” and the apostle gives this his support (Col. 2:5–7; Phil. 3:8–9, 12; Gal. 4:14; cf. Matt. 26:26).
