On the day of Pentecost, Peter preaches the first new covenant sermon, proclaiming the death and resurrection of Christ and calling upon his hearers to repent and believe in Christ (Acts 2:14–41). Multitudes “received his word,” “were baptized,” and, Luke adds, “there were added that day about three thousand souls” (2:41)....The word of God would no less define the people of God in their corporate existence. The church is brought into being in connection with the word and is defined and identified by that same word.
